I was diagnosed with endometriosis more than 12 years ago. I have never heard of it, and none of the doctors I had seen had ever mentioned that having severe painful periods could be a symptom of a medical condition. My worst symptom was excruciating pain during the cycle and continues to progress to a mild or moderate pain after that. This prolonged chronic pain has really zapped my energy and affected my moods and total well-being. At times the pain may subside a little but there was always a terror that it may return.
Throughout the years I have taken various prescription medications and undergone two major surgeries. Unfortunately none of the medications have offered complete relief and some have brought on unpleasant side effects. The second surgery that I went through did not help at all. The pain came back after just 3 months of the surgery. I have to suffer in silent physically and emotionally. Friends and colleagues always dismissed pain as being all in the mind. The pain that I suffered daily had become unbearable and I know taking painkillers to be able to function was not a solution. Finally I quit my job and decided to make changes to my lifestyle.
I had a more positive experience with alternative therapies. I did Qi Gong and tried traditional herbal remedies, meditated and do voluntary service work. Certainly all these had help my body to heal slowly. About 8 months ago my friend told me about mangosteen juice. As I’m open to alternative natural healing I gave it a try. There was nothing to loose. At the beginning, I took 60 ml three times a day for 6 days. Voilà! I cannot believe it, my pain was gone. I continue with the juice and guess what – there was no pain even during my cycle!
This juice is a miracle for me. I have been on the mangosteen juice since then and have not felt so great. I have much more energy and a new life. I have not been working for quite awhile and now I have a job. I’m feeling on top of the world and life is great. I have my friend to thank you and I want to share my story especially to those who is suffering from endometriosis and other chronic pain or inflammation. I truly understand your pain. Don't give up! Nutritional supplements, a healthy diet, exercise and a positive outlook on life maybe the answer to your problem.

For many women, menstruation is just a monthly occurrence. But when you have endometriosis, monthly cramps don’t just cramp your style: Your period may be punctuated with severe lower back pain, tenderness and swelling in your abdomen. There may even be discomfort during sex or while you’re going to the bathroom. Sometimes there can be difficulty conceiving.
Each month, the tissue lining your uterus thickens with blood to form a nourishing nest in preparation for a fetus. When conception doesn’t occur, this lining, called the endometrium, sheds through your vagina, and you menstruate. But with endometriosis, this tissue is outside the uterus—attached to the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bladder or colon—and causing misery because it’s in the wrong place.
Doctors aren’t sure what causes endometriosis, but pregnancy (when possible) and breastfeeding can temporarily end the symptoms. And the natural remedies in this chapter—in conjunction with medical care and used with your doctor’s approval—may help relieve the symptoms of endometriosis, according to some health professionals.
See Your Medical Doctor When...
You have sudden sharp pain in your pelvic area around the time of your period that lasts for more than two days.
You feel pain or burning while having a bowel movement.
You have blood in your urine or stool.
You have pain during sex.
You are having trouble conceiving.
Flower Remedy/Essence Therapy
“Many women with endometriosis have a tendency to bottle up destructive emotions such as anger,” says Susan Lange, O.M.D., of the Meridian Center for Personal and Environmental Health in Santa Monica, California. “The essence Sticky Monkey Flower helps them release these feelings, which is very therapeutic.” The California Pitcher Plant also has an unblocking effect and may help some women with endometriosis, according to Dr. Lange.
Flower essences are available in some health food stores and through mail order (refer to the resource list on page 635). For information on preparing and administering flower essences, see page 37.
Food Therapy
Fish that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids—mackerel, salmon, anchovies, tuna, whitefish, herring and sardines—help by suppressing the production of prostaglandins, the hormones that cause the cramping that can accompany endometriosis, according to Camran Nezhat, M.D., director of the Fertility and Endoscopy Center and Center for Special Pelvic Surgery in Atlanta.
The three-week detoxification diet (see “Detoxing Your Ills” on page 48) may also benefit some women with endometriosis, says Elson Haas, M.D., director of the Preventive Medical Center of Marin in San Rafael, California, and author of Staying Healthy with Nutrition.
Homeopathy
If you are anxious and weepy and have pain in your ovaries that spreads down to your thighs, try a 6X dose of Lilium tigrum three times a day or a 30C dose once or twice a day until you feel better, suggests Cynthia Mervis Watson, M.D., a family practice physician specializing in homeopathic and herbal therapies in Santa Monica, California. She says that the same dosage of Sepia may help other women, particularly pale-skinned brunettes who have premenstrual syndrome, with outbursts of anger and pain during intercourse or menstruation. Belladonna, in a 6X dose three times a day or a 30C dose once or twice daily, may relieve endometriosis, says Dr. Watson, especially if you feel hot and flushed, feel restless and anxious, develop sudden pain during menstruation that spreads into your legs and have a blood flow that is bright red and profuse.
Lilium tigrum, Sepia and Belladonna are available in many health food stores. To purchase homeopathic remedies by mail, refer to the resource list on page 637.
Hydrotherapy
Taken three times a week, the contrast sitz bath is very effective at relieving the discomfort of endometriosis, says Tori Hudson, N.D., a naturopathic physician and professor at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon. “This improves circulation in the pelvis and reduces pain and irritation,” says Dr. Hudson. For instructions on preparing a contrast sitz bath, see “Hydrotherapy at Home” on page 78.
Juice Therapy
Try any fresh fruit juice, but dark grape, mango, papaya and pineapple juices are best, says John Peterson, M.D., an Ayurvedic practitioner in Muncie, Indiana. He recommends drinking as much as you want of the juice daily, apart from meals. Drink the juice at room temperature and do not blend the juice of your choice with other fruit or vegetable juices.
For information on juicing techniques, see page 93.
Vitamin and Mineral Therapy
omega-3 fatty acids suppress production of prostaglandins, the hormones that cause cramping, says Elson Haas, M.D., director of the Preventive Medical Center of Marin in San Rafael, California, and author of Staying Healthy with Nutrition. To get these acids, he recommends fish oil capsules, taken according to the dosage on the label. fish oil capsules are available in most health food stores.
Flaxseed oil contains another essential fatty acid that may help, says Dr. Haas. Flaxseed oil is available in liquid and capsule form in most health food stores; Dr. Haas says to take a daily dose of either one teaspoon of the liquid or two to three capsules.
Some women benefit from the following daily supplement regimen, according to Susan Lark, M.D., author of Fibroid Tumors and Endometriosis: between 400 and 2,000 international units (IU) of vitamin E (women with diabetes or high blood pressure should take only 100 IU); 3 milligrams (5,000 IU) of beta-carotene; 300 milligrams of vitamin B6 and 50 milligrams of B-complex vitamins; up to 4,000 milligrams of vitamin C; and 800 milligrams of bioflavonoids. The doses recommended for vitamin E, vitamin C, vitamin B6 and the B-complex vitamins are higher than the Recommended Dietary Allowances, says Dr. Lark, and should not be taken for longer than three months without the advice of a doctor.

Up to 50% of menstruating women have endometriosis,[21] a condition that can result in excruciating chronic pain and infertility. The only cure is radical surgery. And no one even knows exactly what causes it, or even clearly what the risk factors are.[22] A new study just published, though, offers some insight into the development of this disease.
Studying hundreds of women with confirmed endometriosis, Italian researchers found that those eating just one daily serving of meat (beef or pork--poultry was not studied) seemed to double their risk of developing endometriosis. Eating fresh fruit, on the other hand, seemed to drop their risk 20% and, based on this research, eating just a single serving of green vegetables every day may cut your risk of developing endometriosis in half!
So to help prevent this painful condition, women may want to eat more greens and less beings.
